Whose Desire Is It? Are You Manifesting What’s Actually Yours?

Whose Desire Is It?
Soul Sermon
On desire, conditioning, and the strange grace of wanting the wrong thing first.

I came across something Erykah Badu said that put words to a thing I’d been circling for a while. Wanting it all can become a prison. I sat with it, and the question that surfaced wasn’t whether wanting it all is the problem. It was quieter than that. Who do you want it all for?

In my Manifest Your Year cohort, we’ve been living in exactly that question. Not whether your desires are big enough or worthy enough, but whether they’re even yours. How much of what you want is true to you, and how much got handed to you by your environment, your family, the people you spent your early life trying to belong to? It’s the desire version of an old debate. Nature or nurture. Only now it’s aimed at the most intimate part of you, the part that’s certain it already knows what it wants.

Here’s the uncomfortable part. Most of us move through the world running a program we never agreed to. We recognize it instantly on a screen. We watch The Matrix and feel something stir. We watch Westworld and understand, in our bodies, what it means to be a host who believes her thoughts are her own. Then we close the laptop and go run the same loop ourselves, no questions asked, including the one this is all really about. Why do we want what we want?

You can critique the programming on a screen and still go home and run it.

This is part of why I connect to reincarnation and astrology the way I do. They give you a peek behind the mirror. Spiritual systems thin the veil. There’s a moment in scripture, when the ego dies, when Jesus dies, that the veil between God and man is torn in two. I think about that often. The practices that actually carry you through awakening and integration do a version of the same thing. They quiet the egoic noise just enough that you can feel the part of you that was never only you. The part plugged into source, into the collective, into something far larger than this one life.

It’s the NPC becoming aware. She’s the character inside the game, living the story, and she’s also the one who built the room she’s standing in. Source and creation at once. A way for her to experience herself, if you want to get into the observer effect about it. Because how does anyone become aware they exist without something to reflect off of? I’ll be honest, I don’t fully know whether that’s a spiritual idea or a scientific one. Maybe it’s both.

Maybe that’s the whole point. You can’t see anything clearly, from either direction, without the constriction of its opposite. You don’t know the pleasure of joy without the agony of pain. You don’t know spirit without a body, or a body without spirit. The contrast isn’t in the way of the experience. The contrast is what makes the experience possible at all.

So here’s where it leaves me. Once you know you’re both the player and the creator, both pleasure and pain, both instinctual and imprintable, how do you get down to the root of what you actually want and build your life from there? And if that rooted desire is the aligned one, then what was the point of all the imprinted desires you carried to get here?

I keep landing in the same place. Maybe the imprinted desire was never the thing in your way. Maybe it was the mirror. Maybe the only way to know what’s truly yours is to spend a while wanting what isn’t, until the difference becomes something you can finally feel.
