Why Getting What You Want Never Feels Like Enough

Why Getting What You Want Never Feels Like Enough
Soul Sermon
On the difference between a thing and a desire, and the wound we keep asking our success to heal.

We almost always name our desires as things. A number in the bank. A house. A title. And the number is usually specific. Say it’s a million dollars in savings. You can picture it, you can want it, you can build a whole plan around getting it.

But a million dollars is not a desire. A million dollars is a thing. The desire is whatever you believe that thing is going to make you feel. So the real question is the one we skip. What’s the emotional outcome you’re actually reaching for? For most people chasing that number, it’s security. Safety. The bone-deep exhale of knowing you’re going to be okay.

And almost none of this was your idea. You didn’t decide on your own that money equals safety. You were shown it, over and over, by a world that made the equation for you before you were old enough to question it. So you inherited the target. The thing got assigned to the feeling, and you went to work.

And then you get it. The number lands in the account, and it feels like nothing. Not safety, not security, not the exhale. It just sits there. And it gets worse, because now you have something you didn’t have before. Something to lose. The fear of lack you’ve been running from this whole time shows up again, wearing a nicer outfit. Now it’s the fear of losing what you’ve got. You wanted out of scarcity, and you manifested a more sophisticated version of it.

This is what I mean when I say we manifest backward. Manifestation isn’t broken. That’s almost the problem. It works. It will hand you the thing. It just can’t hand you the feeling if the feeling was never what you aimed at. Without a clear sense of what you’re actually trying to experience, you keep landing in things that look like the destination and feel like nothing.

I’m not making desire the villain, because this isn’t me saying desire is bad or that wanting things makes you shallow. Want the house. Want the number. The point was never to stop desiring. The point is to aim. And you can’t aim at the emotional root of a desire until you can tell which desires are even yours, until you can separate what you want from what you were handed. That work is the whole work. Knowing yourself isn’t the soft part of this. It’s the part that everything else depends on.

Because here’s the layer underneath the layer. Sometimes the feeling you’re chasing through the thing isn’t just a feeling. It’s a wound. The hunger for safety usually grew where safety was missing. So the thing doesn’t just get assigned to a feeling, it gets assigned to a healing. The success, the money, the recognition, all of it gets quietly handed a job it was never capable of doing.

And a wound cannot be filled from the outside. So the thing is, never enough. Not because it’s too small, but because you gave it the wrong job. You can keep raising the number, and it will keep coming up short, because it was never short to begin with. It was misassigned.

The way out is not more success. The way out is becoming strong enough, whole enough, that success is no longer being asked to heal the wound. Because as long as success is carrying that, no amount of it will ever be enough. The number was never the problem. The job you gave it was.
